A B1 certificate is often required for jobs, apprenticeships, visa, naturalization, and certain official procedures.

Many employers require at least B1 to ensure that you can communicate effectively in the workplace and understand instructions. B1 is also the minimum requirement for certain residence procedures or further education programs. A recognized certificate officially proves that you meet the language requirements – and significantly improves your professional opportunities.

There are several internationally recognized B1 certificates, including telc German B1, Goethe-Zertifikat B1, ÖSD B1, and the German Test for Immigrants (DTZ) – B1 level within the integration course.

All of these assess reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills and are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Which certificate is right for you depends on your goals – many authorities accept multiple exam formats. Our school is happy to assist you with choosing and preparing for the right certificate.

At B1, you can communicate confidently in most everyday situations, hold longer conversations, and express your opinions with reasoning. Learners can understand the main points in work, school, leisure, or current topics and can write simple, coherent texts – for example, emails, personal reports, or short statements.

You can also talk about plans, goals, experiences, or problems and respond spontaneously to conversation partners. B1 is therefore the step toward independent language use and forms the foundation for professional life, studies, or further language levels such as B2.

B1 can be challenging for many learners, but it is very achievable – especially with a solid A2 foundation. Grammar becomes more extensive and texts longer, but learning at the B1 level is often particularly enjoyable because you can feel how independently you are able to express yourself.

With clear course structures, plenty of speaking exercises, and regular reviews, the transition is smooth. Many participants experience B1 as the stage where German “really works” in everyday life and where they gain noticeably more confidence.

A B1 German course usually takes 8–16 weeks, depending on whether you study intensively or alongside work.

In an intensive course, learners usually reach the B1 level within two months. Those in evening or part-time courses should plan for around four months. The key to success is regular practice, actively speaking, and applying what you have learned in everyday life – this stabilizes your language skills and allows you to express yourself much more independently.

The B1 placement test (language level check) shows whether you can start directly in a B1 course or if an A2.2 course would be more suitable. The test takes about 30 minutes, is free of charge, and will be sent to you after your non-binding request.

It assesses grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension. Sometimes an additional verbal conversation is required. Based on your results, we can determine exactly which module (B1.1 or B1.2) is the best starting point for you – so you learn at the optimal level and make rapid progress.
