Deckchairs, lawn & view of the Votive Church – particularly pleasant in spring. - Campus im Alten AKH (1090)
With university flair and catering options for the break. - Donaukanal, Alte Donau, Donauinsel
Also recommended in the city centre in the mornings. The best place to learn is by the water.
4. Unusual places to learn in your own home 🛋️
Not everyone has a perfect home office – but you can get creative! Here are a few unusual but effective places to learn:
- Windowsill or balcony
With cushions & coffee, this quickly becomes your mini café. Light & fresh air help you concentrate. - Kitchen
Kitchen table = neutral floor and the fridge is perfect for learning posters or mind maps. Also listen to podcasts or similar while cooking. - Bathroom
Post-its on the mirror help you learn vocabulary. Listen to Austrian radio stations during your morning routine, e.g. Ö1 or FM4. - WC
Ideal for mini learning moments 🤣, but seriously: learning posters or word lists on the inside of the door help enormously - Yoga mat
Learn cross-legged – with a laptop on a stool or stack of books. A change of perspective sometimes helps more than coffee. - In front of the bookshelf
Do not sit down, but repeat vocabulary while standing. Good for short repetition phases or mind maps.
5. Useful tools for self-learning – without a screen 🧰
✍️ Index cards (e.g. A8 format or DIY)
- Ideal for vocabulary, sentence building blocks or small grammar exercises.
- Tip: Use colours (e.g. for the articles) for more structure.
- Works alone or in pairs – e.g. in a café or park.
📓 Learning journal or grammar diary
- Keep a daily (or weekly) record of what you have learnt – in keywords or as a short text.
- Analyse spelling mistakes, collect new words, write down questions for your DIALOG trainer.
🎲 Language games for 1-2 people
- Dice game: We recommend Storycubes! Roll the dice and tell a story.
- Card method: Draw a word from your card index and form a sentence.
✂️ Learning posters or mind maps
- Hang them in places where you often pass by: kitchen, bathroom, door.
- Especially good for grammar overviews, verbs with prepositions, sentence structure etc.
📚 Books with exercises & solutions
- E.g. “Grammatik aktiv” from Cornelsen, our trainers also like to use it.
- These books work like little “mini-courses” to brush up on grammar.
