Would you like to learn a new language too? Find out here how Pearl benefited from the German courses offered at our language school. Let’s get started!
Motivation & Learning Atmosphere
DIALOG: How did you find the learning atmosphere at DIALOG?
PEARL: First thing I’ve noticed at DIALOG were the trainers — always welcoming and passionate about their work. I’ve had my lessons with five different trainers, and all of them showed their passion for teaching. In my opinion, they create a safe space for students. They always encourage everyone to speak German, even when it’s hard. I find that this encouragement has helped me and others with communication!
The trainers are always welcoming and passionate.
DIALOG: How did the courses help you improve your German skills?
PEARL: I find that the courses at DIALOG helped me with casual and formal situations outside of school. Before my course I was unable to communicate with anyone; however, after only four months I was able to function in the city. Right now I have enough courage to apply to a fully German-speaking job.
DIALOG: Were the class times flexible enough for your schedule?
The time in which the courses take place are perfect for my schedule. My work schedule is always busy during the evening and night. Having the course at 9 am is perfect for me. I even get to enjoy my hobbies after the course :)
Living German in Everyday Life
DIALOG: What learning tools or materials have helped you improve your German?
Trainers at DIALOG recommended me to buy and read A2–B2 books from the bookstore. I also recommend buying children’s books (for example PIXI) and following along. From them you can learn German with context.
Working in English is both a blessing and a curse!!
DIALOG: How did you practice and improve your German outside of class?
PEARL: I improved my German at work. I am lucky and cursed to work at a fully English-speaking bar; however, I always try to communicate with customers in German. I also practice speaking German with my friends. Speaking to anyone and everyone is the key.
DIALOG: Do you think Vienna is a good city to learn German in?
PEARL: Vienna makes it a little bit difficult to learn German. Whenever I try to speak German and people notice that I’m not so good at it, they switch to English -_- this gets me out of Deutsch vibez.
DIALOG: What are your favourite German (or Austrian German) words or phrases?
PEARL: I don’t think I know too many sayings, but my favourite word in German is „Eierschalen-Sollbruchstellen-Verursacher“. It’s soooo long and in a way inspiring.
DIALOG: What are some useful phrases or tips for newcomers in Vienna?
PEARL: I recommend learning the phrases „zusammen“ and „das passt“. Support the waitresses in town! Haha.
DIALOG: What’s the best thing to do in Vienna when you need a break from studying German?
PEARL: The best thing to do in Vienna is to get out from home. Wherever you go, there are interesting historical landmarks (like the Augarten). Everything here has a deep history to itself. Generally, everything here looks beautiful. Get lost in Vienna and absorb what it has to offer you.
Success and New Goals
DIALOG: Do you feel that the course has given you the tools to communicate successfully in a German-speaking environment?
PEARL: I feel as if the course gave me all I need to be successful in Vienna. I’ve gotten encouragement from the course to speak my truth. It allowed me to understand and communicate with others. Essentially it allowed me to be a functioning member of society here. I like that.
