Atmosphere is relaxed, warm & professional
Ann is a translator and writer. She moved to Vienna for work in 2020. At first, because she worked in an international university where the working language was English, she didn’t learn any German. After three years in Vienna, she decided to study the language so that she could enjoy Vienna more and get to know Viennese more successfully. (Also, she wanted to keep a promise she had made to her children that she would learn German.)
Here in Vienna, she completed German levels A1.1 to B2.1 in our intensive courses at our DIALOG language school from July to November 2023. In June 2024 she returned to take a conversation course and individual lessons.
Do you want to learn a new language too? Find out here how Ann has benefited from the German courses on offer at our language school. Let’s go!
Customer care, atmosphere & methods at DIALOG
ANN: There is always a friendly welcome when you arrive at DIALOG. The office staff is helpful and efficient. For some of my courses, I was awarded financing by waff, a city agency that supports professional development, and this meant I had to ask DIALOG for additional documentation. They always filled it out quickly and expertly.
DIALOG: How did you find the atmosphere? Did it help you to feel comfortable and motivated to learn German?
ANN: The relaxed, warm, and professional atmosphere helped me feel comfortable while I was studying German (which I found quite challenging, especially at first).
Course groups & course offer
DIALOG: How did the trainers support you in learning German? What specific aspects of the courses did you particularly like?
ANN: I appreciated the small class size and the multiple opportunities to pratice actually speaking German. I also really loved the classrooms, which are attractively furnished and well set-up from a technical standpoint, with whiteboards and good audio and video equipment.
DIALOG: Did the German courses and the additional programme (such as workshops ) help you to use your language skills in professional situations?
ANN: I found the “Bewerbungsschreiben” workshop to be very useful. I am a career changer and I learned new strategies for describing my experience in cover letters.
Tools & self-study
DIALOG: Which technical aids (websites, apps, etc.) helped you to improve your German language skills?
ANN: I like to listen to podcasts like „Augen zu“, an art podcast from the newspaper “Die Zeit”. “Easy German” makes great videos and worksheets for reviewing German and vocabulary using real life situations.
DIALOG: What else helped you learn? How did you improve your German outside of class?
ANN: I love going to museums and here in Vienna it’s possible to attend events like exhibition openings, Curator and artist talks, and guided tours. If you are interested in art, this is a great way to improve your German comprehension skills!
Learning German in Vienna
DIALOG: Is Vienna a good city for learning German?
ANN: I feel lucky to live in Vienna and to be able to study German here. It’s a really wonderful city, with so much on offer.
DIALOG: What is the best thing to do in Vienna when you need a break from learning German?
ANN: It is never boring here. In addition to all the museums, Vienna also has a wonderful network of public libraries. I especially love the Hauptbucherei (main library), which is located in a very interesting building in the seventh district, which has tons of books in languages other than German, including a huge selection of English books. I often take walks along the woodsy part of the Donaukanal or on the Stadtwanderwege (city hiking trails). In winter there are many places to ice skate. The Austrian Filmmusem shows great films.
For people who need a break from studying German and have good English skills, I recommend the Open Mics and True Story Nights organized by the Vienna Storytelling Collective. And for people who like writing, I recommend the Sunday Writers Club, an international writing association based in Vienna.
I could name a lot more things, but this would become too long!
Learning success & conclusion
DIALOG: Do you feel that the course has given you the tools you need to communicate successfully in a German-speaking environment?
ANN: Thanks to the many speaking exercises, I gradually became more and more comfortable expressing myself in German.
DIALOG: What is still difficult for you in everyday life, even though you can already communicate well in German?
ANN: Sometimes I feel frustrated that I can’t say everything I would like to say. And I still find prepositions extremely difficult!
DIALOG: How did DIALOG – DER SPRACHCAMPUS fulfil your expectations of a German course and would you recommend the school to others?
I recommend DIALOG – DER SPRACHCAMPUS to anyone who wants to learn German in a relaxed and supportive environment.
